Why do I ride?

For me, bicycling has always been about the joy of the ride. When I was younger, it was a way to challenge myself by setting realistic goals and being able to attain them. Earlier on in my bicycling "career" (before I got my driver's license!), the bicycle was my main mode of transportation. Today, I still ride for the enjoyment, but also to stay physically active. It is a part of my exercise regimen that includes running and weight lifting.

Bicycling also provides a healthy means of escape from the everyday pressures of life. When I get out on a ride, nothing else seems to matter. It's just me, my bicycle and the open road. There's plenty of time to think about anything (or nothing at all!) and take in all that is around me - the feel of the wind, the sun and the view of the open road and the big, open sky.

I never have been one to go on very many group rides. I have done a few in the past and there is a great feeling of commeradiere as a group that shares a common interest. However, I have always found the most enjoyment as a solitary rider. There is just something about being out there alone without any agenda other than the enjoyment of the ride and putting miles on the clock.
